Abstract The healthcare sector is undergoing a profound digital transformation driven by the increasing adoption of Electronic Health Records (EHRs), medical imaging systems, wearable devices, telemedicine platforms, Internet of Medical Things (IoMT), and artificial intelligence technologies. These innovations generate massive volumes of healthcare data that can be leveraged to improve disease diagnosis, treatment planning, predictive analytics, and personalized medicine. However, healthcare data are highly sensitive and subject to strict privacy regulations, making centralized data collection and analysis challenging. Traditional machine learning approaches often require data aggregation into centralized repositories, creating concerns related to patient privacy, data security, ownership, and regulatory compliance.
Federated Learning (FL) has emerged as a promising privacy-preserving machine learning paradigm that enables collaborative model training across multiple healthcare institutions without requiring the direct sharing of patient data. Instead of transferring sensitive information, healthcare organizations locally train machine learning models and share only model parameters or updates with a central aggregation server. This decentralized approach enhances privacy protection while enabling the development of robust and generalizable healthcare analytics models.
This study investigates Federated Learning for Privacy-Preserving Healthcare Analytics by examining its architectural foundations, applications, benefits, implementation challenges, opportunities, and future research directions. A descriptive and analytical research methodology supported by questionnaire surveys, case study evaluation, comparative analysis, and secondary literature review has been adopted. Findings indicate that federated learning significantly improves privacy preservation, collaborative healthcare intelligence, predictive accuracy, and regulatory compliance. However, challenges related to communication efficiency, model heterogeneity, data imbalance, cybersecurity threats, and explainability remain critical concerns. The study concludes that federated learning represents a transformative framework for secure and collaborative healthcare analytics in the era of digital medicine.
