Smart Building Technologies for Energy-Efficient Infrastructure Development

Author(s) Elin Karlsson

Abstract Smart building technologies have become an important component of modern infrastructure development because buildings account for substantial energy consumption through heating, cooling, lighting, ventilation, appliances, and other operational systems. Conventional building management approaches frequently rely on fixed schedules and limited monitoring, which can result in unnecessary energy consumption and inefficient resource utilization. The integration of Internet of Things devices, artificial intelligence, machine learning, building automation systems, smart sensors, advanced metering infrastructure, digital twins, and predictive analytics provides opportunities to improve building energy performance while maintaining occupant comfort. This paper examines the role of smart building technologies in supporting energy-efficient infrastructure development and evaluates how integrated digital systems can improve operational efficiency, energy management, and sustainability. The study adopts a structured analytical methodology based on secondary research, thematic synthesis, and comparative assessment of technology-enabled building management approaches. Key technological components are examined according to their contribution to real-time monitoring, automated control, predictive optimization, and sustainable infrastructure management.
The analysis indicates that integrated sensor networks and intelligent building management systems can provide more responsive control of energy-consuming equipment, while artificial intelligence and predictive analytics can support demand forecasting and proactive optimization. Digital twins further enhance infrastructure management by enabling virtual representation, simulation, and performance evaluation of building systems. However, implementation challenges remain associated with initial investment, interoperability, cybersecurity, data quality, technical expertise, and legacy infrastructure. The paper argues that smart building technologies should be implemented through integrated and lifecycle-oriented strategies rather than isolated technology adoption. Effective deployment can contribute to lower operational energy consumption, improved resource efficiency, enhanced occupant experience, and long-term infrastructure sustainability. The study concludes that combining intelligent monitoring, automation, predictive analytics, and digital infrastructure management provides a strong technological foundation for developing energy-efficient and resilient buildings.
