Intelligent Transportation Systems for Sustainable Urban Mobility

Abstract Rapid urbanization, increasing vehicle ownership, traffic congestion, air pollution, and growing transportation demand have created significant challenges for sustainable urban development. Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) provide a technology-oriented approach for addressing these challenges by integrating sensing technologies, communication networks, artificial intelligence, data analytics, connected vehicles, intelligent traffic control, and real-time mobility services. This paper examines the role of ITS in promoting sustainable urban mobility and evaluates how intelligent technologies can improve transportation efficiency, safety, accessibility, and environmental performance. The study adopts a structured analytical methodology based on secondary research and thematic assessment of major ITS technologies and their applications in urban transportation. Particular attention is given to intelligent traffic management, public transportation optimization, connected mobility, predictive traffic analytics, smart parking, and multimodal transportation systems. The analysis indicates that real-time traffic monitoring and adaptive signal control can improve traffic-flow management, while predictive analytics can support congestion forecasting and proactive transportation planning. Intelligent public transportation systems can improve route efficiency, scheduling, passenger information, and service reliability.
Connected vehicle technologies can further strengthen communication between vehicles, infrastructure, and transportation management centers, creating opportunities for safer and more coordinated mobility. However, effective ITS implementation is constrained by infrastructure investment requirements, data interoperability, cybersecurity, privacy concerns, digital inequality, and institutional coordination. The paper argues that ITS should be implemented as an integrated urban mobility framework rather than as isolated technological applications. Sustainable transportation outcomes depend on the coordination of intelligent infrastructure with public transit, walking, cycling, shared mobility, and low-emission transportation options. The study concludes that intelligent transportation technologies can contribute substantially to sustainable urban mobility when supported by appropriate infrastructure, data governance, inclusive planning, and long-term policy strategies.
