| Abstract | The rapid transformation of industrial environments toward intelligent and interconnected production systems has increased the demand for reliable, low-latency, scalable, and secure wireless communication technologies. Industrial automation increasingly depends on wireless connectivity to support sensors, robotic systems, autonomous mobile equipment, industrial controllers, machine-to-machine communication, and real-time monitoring applications. Conventional wired networks provide high reliability but can involve significant installation, maintenance, and reconfiguration requirements, particularly within dynamic production environments. Advanced wireless technologies provide greater flexibility and mobility while enabling large-scale connectivity across distributed industrial assets. This paper examines advanced wireless communication technologies for industrial automation, focusing on industrial wireless sensor networks, 5G and emerging 6G technologies, industrial Wi-Fi, low-power wide-area communication, edge-assisted communication, and time-sensitive wireless networking. A conceptual and analytical methodology is used to evaluate the communication requirements of industrial automation and identify technological mechanisms capable of addressing latency, reliability, scalability, mobility, security, and energy-efficiency requirements. The analysis demonstrates that 5G-enabled industrial networks can provide enhanced reliability and low-latency communication for demanding automation applications, while wireless sensor technologies and low-power communication mechanisms remain valuable for monitoring applications with lower bandwidth requirements. Edge computing can further improve response performance by processing industrial data closer to production environments. The study proposes a layered wireless communication framework integrating heterogeneous wireless technologies, edge computing, intelligent network management, security mechanisms, and industrial automation applications. The framework emphasizes technology selection according to application requirements rather than reliance on a single communication standard. Major challenges include electromagnetic interference, network congestion, spectrum management, cybersecurity, interoperability, infrastructure cost, energy constraints, and coexistence with legacy industrial systems. The study concludes that advanced wireless communication can provide an important foundation for flexible and intelligent industrial automation when supported by appropriate network planning, deterministic communication mechanisms, security controls, and adaptive resource management. |
